Derek Paul, DVM
Dr. Derek Paul holds a BS in Systems Engineering from the United States Naval Academy and served his country for 6 years as a Naval Officer before returning to his home state of Illinois for veterinary school. After graduating from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine with a focus on Wildlife Health and Conservation Medicine, he completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship in the Denver area. Dr. Paul joined the emergency service at Animal ER in February 2009. His professional interests include integrative medicine, wildlife health, and conservation medicine and he has recently completed study in veterinary acupuncture. When not working, he enjoys hiking, snowboarding, playing poker, traveling, and hanging out at home with his two mutts, Pancho and Lefty.
Shaila Raj, DVM
Originally from Texas, Dr. Raj holds a B.S. in Microbiology and Biology from The University of Texas at Arlington, a B.S. in Animal Science from The University of Massachusetts, and an M.S. in Biomedical Sciences from Colorado State University. She received her D.V.M. from Colorado State University in May 2008. Following veterinary school, Dr. Raj completed an internship at VCA Alameda East Veterinary Hospital in Denver. Professionally, Dr. Raj is most interested in exotics, emergency/critical care, and internal medicine. She also enjoys teaching and pet assisted therapy. During her time off, Dr. Raj enjoys spending time with her husband, Aric, their beautiful little girl, Neela, and their two dogs, Homer and Milhouse.
Kate Long, DVM
Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care
Kate received a Bachelor of Science in Physics/Biophysics from Haverford College in PA, and her veterinary degree at the University of California at Davis. After a small animal rotating internship at the Emergency Animal Hospital and Referral Center in San Diego CA, she spent several years as an emergency clinician before completing a residency in emergency and critical care at the Animal Emergency Center in Glendale, Wisconsin. She became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2008. Her professional interests include cardiovascular pathophysiology, early recognition and stabilization of shock states and intensive nutritional support. In her free time, Kate practices Aikido and enjoys swimming, hiking, camping and other outdoor activities. She currently lives in Colorado Springs with her dog Jasmin and Jasmin's feline sidekick, Rabbit.
